How to Select a Home Insurance Agent

When you buy a home you'll likely be required to provide proof of homeowners' insurance prior to closing, and it can be tempting to buy the first policy you review just to save time and avoid stress. However, you could be setting yourself up for many problems down the road if your policy doesn't offer the coverage you need. Here are the instructions that you will need.

1. Ask you real estate agent who she/he recommends.

Many real estate agents work directly with a homeowners' insurance agent, who can sit down with you and review what type of coverage you need. However, don't feel like you have to use this company just because it's what your real estate agent recommends.

2. Shop around for the most coverage at the best rate.

After speaking with the homeowners' insurance agent recommended by your real estate agent, you should have a good idea of the type of coverage you'll need. This can be a time-consuming process so plan to call around to different companies when you have a couple of hours free.

3. Check for special discounts when you're shopping around.

Some companies offer discounts if you install a security system or buy a car insurance policy, as well. Some homeowners' insurance companies also offer a senior discount, so be sure to ask if you think you might qualify.

4. Answer questions honestly when you're getting rate quotes.

You'll be asked very specific questions about the home's square footage, age of appliances, roof, heating, plumbing and electrical systems, and the value of your possessions. You'll receive the value of what you report to the insurance company if your home is destroyed, so it's important to be as accurate as possible.

5. Add a clause for your valuables, such as jewelry and electronics.

The types of valuables you're insuring could affect your rate, so be sure to ask the insurance agent specifically about the items you want covered and the cost to do so.
