Cleaning and Organizing for Fall

The changing of the seasons gets lots of people thinking about cleaning and organizing their homes, yards and garages. For many people, fall cleaning focuses on throwing out all the stuff that accumulated in the garage during the summer and washing the windows. Still, if you’re making the effort to tidy up, there are some fall cleaning and organizing tips to share.

Use plastic totes to organize seasonal clothing, bedding, curtains and rugs, and label each one on the top and front for easy identification. Make sure everything has been cleaned before storing.
This is a good time to vacuum behind and under and around things that might otherwise get ignored. Get to the refrigerator coils, behind the stove, washer and dryer, ceilings and under furniture.
Go through your spice cabinet and pantry and weed out the old stuff. With the holidays coming, it’s best to get rid of the old and buy some nice fresh replacements.
While you’re in the kitchen, go ahead and clean out the fridge. Get rid of anything past its prime and wipe down the shelves.
Use a large rectangular basket to corral your plastic containers. With everything in a basket, you can just slide it out part way to get what you need, or pull the whole thing out and set it on the counter.
Recycle magazines once you’ve read them. If there’s something particularly interesting, tear out the page and file it.
Keep a wastebasket in every room. There are lots of attractive choices, and it keeps the clutter at a minimum. Be sure to empty them often, especially if food is tossed.
